How To Actually Get Work Done: Waterfall vs. Agile Workflow

Recent Life Hacks: I finally stumbled upon a method, other than my sticky notes, that will help with project management. I work with and talk to, a lot of freelancers, and it has come to my attention that a lot of us use different project management systems to manage our workload. Personally, I have used the square method, and it works most of the time. However, I stumbled upon two even better methods to help people who work in demanding jobs or run a freelance business and are managing client workflow on the ‘feast-side‘ of the coin. Using one of the methods below can be helpful, and if you’re looking to start creating right away, Trello.com provides an online drag and drop creator’s studio to make your workflow.

The two methods are Waterfall and Agile project management systems. I would recommend researching the models in more depth on your own, but here are the quick meeting minutes for those of us who are on a tight schedule to get projects pushed through.

The Waterfall Method

Freelance career website, Upwork.com, describes the late 80’s/90’s project management system as the “traditional approach” to developing a product from idea to retail-ready.  In this method, the project is broken up into steps that are to be completed in a sequence. In this workflow, each stage must be completed before starting the next. For those of us who are visual, the steps are aligned to look like a waterfall, where backtracking is not an option. You must ‘go with the flow‘.

The Agile Method

The same freelance website, Upwork.com, also describes the Agile method as one of the newer project management systems. The Agile way is more flexible and less costly than the waterfall method, especially when you need to backtrack and make edits, additions, or omissions. Instead of upfront planning altogether, the Agile method focuses on the ability to build and react to change in times of uncertainty and turbulence. This method is packed with an open backlog that you can continuously add to and is positioned in the model to kept to keep track of features and requirements that the clients want. From the backlog, one part of the project is selected and you work on it until completion. It is a way to select a priority and complete it while touching base with peers and making adjustments in a tight window.  After one is complete, then you select the next priority item from the backlog and repeat the cycle through to completion. You get projects completed, one piece at a time with room for edits and revisions. I believe this model is more flexible and reasonable for all those with heavy workloads and a sharp deadline. The website, Agilealliance.org notes that the agile method places an ’emphasis on teamwork, constant user feedback, continuous improvement, and the ability to adapt to changing requirements.’

Both methods are helpful to move projects from start to finish. Challenge yourself to try one or both on your workload, and see how they compare. Work hard today, so you can play harder tomorrow.

How Working 70+ Hours Can Actually Save You

Do you feel stuck? Not sure where to go? Behind on your notes? The truth is, you’re not alone. The other side of the truth is that you have absolutely all the power to pull yourself out of any hole you’ve dug yourself into. 

They say that inspiration strikes us in the most opportune, or in-opportune, moments. Depending on how you look at it, you may have an event in your life that makes you feel like all the doors are closed. But do you remember that old adage? As one door closes, another door opens.

You may have to get out of your comfort zone and begin to push and expand your current limitations. People are really powerful, but our minds can trick us into being lazy and complacent. Get into motion. In order to get ‘un-stuck’ you will need to take massive action. Some people go all in and may get burned out, so here is a pro-tip to help you as you become a person in motion:

  1. Create a list of all your issues on one side of paper, and on the other side make a list of solutions.  
  2. Take one task at a time. Don’t even look at your other list items.
  3. Get into the habit of marking off tasks. You’ll feel more accomplished, and have the confidence to move onto the next task.
  4. Celebrate wins. Make sure you do something nice for yourself to reward your hard efforts. You are after all your own boss.
  5. Repeat.

 

A key factor to keep in mind is that you will need to have a lot of passion. The feeling of being stuck needs to be more painful than the feeling of making changes for the better. Get un-stuck!

When you begin, you need to know that making changes will not be easy, but they will ultimately be worth it. Making positive changes to get in motion will cost you time. Here’s how we get 70 hours, but of course if you’re feeling more ambitions, go settle for more.

Money is the necessity that makes FREEDOM possible for all people, so how do you get it? You make ways for money to flow to you. In one of my previous articles, I talk about methods on how to make money online by freelancing. When you’ve got a method in mind to allow money to flow to you, the real work begins. To make what you need to happen, you will need to put in the hours to get your processes up and running. In the book, Business Brilliant, an estimated majority of millionaires who make $1 million to $30 million work over 70 hours per week.

By getting to work, and getting in motion, you will start to produce more money. Money to pay off debt, money to pay for your child’s college, money to buy a home, and money to wine and dine with your best friends.

Growing your money will take a lot more effort, simply because money is a dame that needs to be woo’ed. More particular, you need to become really good at pleasing people. You can start in your personal life by extending extra effort to be of more value to your friends, neighbors, and peers. When you start to master that level, you can start to please people in business. Here I am referencing the Go-Giver, a must read book for anyone in business. The book references that those who give the most receive the most, especially in unexpected ways. Learn to be the best at serving people, and at pleasing them. You will get a lot further in life.

Giving requires a lot of footwork, which keeps you in motion and helps you build methods for money to flow to you. Being in motion will also require you to put in a lot of hours. Eventually, word will get out that you work your butt off, and people will want to work with you. Everyone needs a hustler. When you are a person of value, you won’t be discarded so easily.

Take the steps today to become a person in motion. Don’t be afraid to put in the hours, should they be 70+, it is your life, and every moment should be worth it to you to make it better. Get unstuck, develop a pathway for money to flow to you, and work passionately. It will not be easy, but it will be worth it. When we set out in life, our parents tell us that we can become anything we want. Your parents are right, and the truth is that you can become anything you set your mind to. The key ingredient, other than knowing what you want, is to have a burning desire for it’s achievement. In academics, I worked very hard to achieve good grades by having all of my assignments turned in on time, and all of the assigned readings completed. Truth is that I had a breakdown when my Dad passed away, and I lost the passion.

While reflecting on my life, I began to ‘wake up’ to the fact that for the past several years I have been just going through the motions like a zombie. I hadn’t found my passion, as it had been hiding in a far corner of my mind just waiting for me to tap into it. Sometimes we have to take ourselves through the hardships we experience by the bad choices we have made in order to learn how to become better people. Sometimes those choices we made can be the most humbling of times. Hardships can get us to concentrate more, mostly because the pain of sitting in our own mess is more painful than change itself.

No person likes change because it takes us out of our comfort zone. But in order to grow as a person, and lead a more richer and fuller life, we need to take inventory and count the cost of what it will take to accomplish what it is that we set our minds to.

An old analogy comes to mind when we talk about achieving the things you so desire: When you decide succeeding is as important as breathing air, it is then that you become successful. So whatever goal you have in mind, work to organize your life in such a way that you can achieve what you set your mind to. Make sure you have the key ingredient of passion, know why you are going after what you want, and everything else becomes much more clear. Your decisions will improve when you find it. Many people freeze up, and watch life’s game happen while others play in the field. You might call it ‘analysis paralysis’, and believe me, we have all been guilty of it on one occasion or another.

 

What you have to do are these three things. Remember, sometimes mastering the basics, no matter how simplistic they may seem, is the key to your success.

 

Find A Template.

Try different business models in different fields. See what direction you are naturally pulled towards. Eventually, after trying different types of work, you will have a sense of what you enjoy doing. There is an old adage that states, ‘pioneering doesn’t pay’, so make sure you find something that there is a business plan template for, that allows you to add value to the market place, and get paid for it. The first couple years, you may do a lot of work that goes unpaid, or unnoticed, but keep at it. You will eventually get paid, and noticed, and the success you find will be your just reward for all the hard work you do.

Examples include Amazon drop shipping, blogging, or starting a service business.

Focus.

Focus on the work you enjoy doing, and keep at it. You may encounter moments where you fail, and fall on your back. Expect this to be something that will happen. The key here is to take inventory of why you failed, and to make sure you learn the lesson in each failure before moving on to the next level of challenges.

Persist.

When you get distracted, or feel you haven’t got any traction, that is when you need to work the hardest. Expect that your success will happen in intervals, and eventually, those successes will all add to your big success. It is most important that who you become in the process is the person you always dreamt you would be. Work, work, and work some more. This will separate you from being just average.

Some key points to remember while you trek down your path to achievement and success: find something you like, make sure you have a template to add value to the marketplace, and get paid for it (you do have to eat), focus on achieving your goal, take inventory and actually learn from the failures, and to persist, and you will have to persist hard. Success always arrives around the next bend in the road, so keep driving.

 

There are times in our lives that define who we are, and moments of extreme success that showcase the fruits of our hard labor. There are also moments where when it is darkest , we truly shine. Walk on, walk hard, and walk towards your goal.
